Winemaker Max Schubert first produced Penfolds Grange Hermitage after he returned from a trip to Bordeaux in 1950. The following year at Magill he innovatively used unseasoned oak barrels to finish the fermentation and mature the red wine. At the time fortified wines were popular and so Penfolds management directed Schubert to discontinue making this wine, but he still produced it in secret. It was not until 1962 that Penfolds accepted the wine for sale. The wine was labelled Grange Hermitage until 1989, as 'Hermitage' was commonly used in Australia in the earlier era to indicate Shiraz content. Penfolds Grange has been recognised as a superlative wine, winning numerous awards. In 2001 Penfolds Grange was added to the BankSA Heritage icons list. |
