Decimal currency was introduced in Australia on 14 February 1967: 'C-day' - 'conversion' or 'changeover' day. A special jingle, sung to the tune of Click go the shears, was created (with words by Ted Roberts) to signal the changeover from pounds, shillings and pence to dollars and cents.

Cartoon character 'Dollar Bill' appeared in the government's extensive campaign to educate and advise the public about the new currency and changeover details including shopping tips.

The News (14 February 1966, p. 1) recorded that:
A general air of excitement was evident in the city today for the first day of currency switch. Thousands of people deliberately spent money to obtain their first dollar notes and coins.
