WOMAD stands for the World of Music, Arts & Dance. The concept of this festival was developed by Peter Gabriel and others in England, and WOMAD festivals are now held in more than 20 countries. The first WOMADelaide was held in February 1992. Initially held in opposite years to the Adelaide Festival of Arts, since 2003 WOMADelaide has been held annually. The festival is staged in Botanic Park over three days.

Over 250 artists from countries around the world present a range of live musical performances, from individual to large groups. Performers have included Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Miriam Makeba, Salif Keita, Youssou N'dour, Baaba Maal, the Master Drummers of Burundi, and the Leningrad Cowboys. Performances are presented on several concert stages, and there are also workshop venues; a 'Global village' with food and drink stalls, various wares, and educational displays; and events for children. T

The WOMADelaide Foundation was set up in 2004 to present the festival and special projects for remote Indigenous arts communities.
