Description :

Leader of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. The article provides detail of the accident that claimed his life

John Riddoch Rymill died as the result of a car accident on 7 September 1968. He had led an expedition to Antarctica in 1934-37 which proved that the Antarctic Peninsula was indeed a peninsula of the main continent and not an archipelago of islands. He also served on three expeditions in the Arctic, taking over the leadership of Gino Watkins' second Greenland expedition following his leader's untimely death.

At the time of the accident Rymill had been following the ambulance that was taking his sick wife to hospital in Adelaide, from their home in Penola. A more lengthy tribute was published on page 2 of the newspaper, under the banner Last of S. A.'s polar explorers.
