With so much financially and emotionally invested in the production of the first Christmas pageant, organiser Edward Hayward would have been pleased with the reviews it received. The Adelaide Chronicle proclaimed it 'Adelaide's best procession' and confirmed that 'adults enjoyed the parade quite as much as the children' (23 November 1933, p. 35). According to The Advertiser 'its main purpose was to provide fun, and it discharged it, better than any procession has for years' (23 November 1933, p.16). In his 'Out among the people',The Advertiser columnist, 'Rufus' had nothing but glowing praise: 'much-travelled friends told me that they had never seen a better procession abroad than that which paraded on Saturday. For dignity, piquancy, arrangement, and appropriate selection of types to represent national characters, the display was a triumphant success' (23 November 1933, p.16). Children left the pageant 'filled with the happiest of thoughts' (The Mail, 18 November 1933, p. 14). Initially conceived as a 'once only' event, the success of the 1933 Christmas pageant led John Martin's to make it an annual spectacle. |
