Department store John Martin's was the organiser and financier of the pageant from its inception in 1933 until 1985 when the retailer was bought by David Jones. At this time sponsorship funding was sought from the State Bank. John Martin's and the State Bank continued to present the pageant together until 1995, after which time David Jones sold the event to the State Government. (John Martin's department stores ceased trading in 1998.) Events South Australia which now stages the pageant is the major events division of the South Australian Tourism Commission, and is also responsible for co-ordinating such events as the Tour Down Under and the World Solar Challenge. Financial support is provided by sponsors, including six credit unions whose pledge of ongoing support entitles them to the naming rights of this South Australian icon. The 2007 Credit Union Christmas pageant took place on Saturday 10 November, celebrating '75 years of magic'. |
