Margaret Browne was the wife of Thomas Browne - the Australian author 'Rolf Boldrewood'. She was born in New South Wales in 1837 and brought up by an uncle after being orphaned at an early age. From childhood she was a passionate gardener.

Her husband's novel, Robbery under arms had given him an international reputation by the time Mrs Browne published her gardening guide, in 1893. Both she and her husband were keen gardeners, and the book was written from fifty years of experience of gardening in Australian conditions and using Australian plants. It was the first Australian gardening guide written by a woman.

Using a calendar style format, the book suggests what to plant when, giving detailed history and description of individual flowers, shrubs and trees.
