Revolving discs transformation. Revolving drawings are superimposed so that the scene shown on each page changes as a tab is turned. Accompanied by verses

Round about pictures is a revolving disc transformation style of movable book, in which by gently turning a tab, the illustration beneath is revealed. Ernest Nister in Germany was largely responsible for developing this type of 'dissolving' picture in the late 19th century. He also developed the 'dissolving' slat style of movable book. Nister realized the potential of the English market and opened an office in London where a team adapted the German texts of the books for the English market. In the United State of America, the firm of EP Dutton arranged to distribute these books there.

Today the interest in the books lies mostly in the illustrations and its construction rather than in the whimsical verse. The books however were immensely popular in their time, and many were reproduced in facsimile during the 1980s.
