A picnic and sports day organised by the United Labor Party in Hamley Bridge probably as a fundraiser for the Party, but with attendance by the Labor Party brass band and the Member of Parliament F W Coneybeer. The band played several concerts during the course of the day and evening function and Coneybeer is listed as one of the performers in the Grand Concert. A variety of races were held including some for children and ladies, and some which were for Labor Party members only. The advertising in the left hand panel is for Adelaide as well as local businesses.
Posters are ephemeral, produced with a short life in mind, placed on hoardings, walls and posts to promote an event, then torn down and discarded. They provide information on an event and invite participation. The letterpress-only poster, like this one, had dominated advertising from the 15th century. It was relatively easy to produce with variations in typefaces and print size used to considerable effect.
Posters, when preserved, are also a record of their time: indicating the type of amusements of the period, the artists who are the star performers, even the individuals who by advertising on a poster are in effect sponsors of the event.
