William Edmunds was a draftsman in the Survey Department and then a Survey Officer with the Royal Australian Engineers. This detailed military survey was possibly compiled from military manoeuvres in the Gawler area including Sandy Creek and Cockatoo Valley, and was printed on fine cloth for use in the field.

With the growth of motor tourism Edmunds privately produced a series of topographical maps of the Adelaide Hills in the 1920s and 1930s.
