Description : |
Large coloured map showing sections (with names), with some natural features indicated. The map also shows mineral claims at Wallaroo, Tipara and Black Point. There are a number of insets:
It also includes a list of names of the mineral companies and the numbers of their claims. The lithographer was R Andrews. Pastoral runs are also indicated with the names of the lessees, for instance Anstey and Giles at Mt Rat and near Port St Vincent (later Port Vincent), and Weaver at Oyster Bay (Stansbury). From 1869 these pastoral runs would gradually be resumed as the lower Peninsula was surveyed and broken up into smaller allotments for farming. The town plan for Port Wakefield shows its distinctive central oval park. Port Wakefield began as the main shipping outlet for the copper from the Burra Mines (further north than the map): ketches would load the copper from the River Wakefield for trans-shipment to Port Adelaide, saving many miles of slow overland travel along largely unmade roads. After the discovery of copper at Wallaroo and Moonta the ore, and later the smelted copper ingots, were shipped from the the port of Wallaroo. |
