Description :

Original hand coloured plate of the Sturt's Desert Pea, the floral emblem of South Australia.

Sturt's Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa) occurs in arid woodlands and on open plains throughout mainland Australia (except Victoria) and can survive the extremes of temperatures experienced in inland deserts. It is a member of the pea family, Fabaceae.

Fanny Elizabeth de Mole's Wild Flowers of South Australia (1861) was the first book published to illustrate the flora of South Australia.
