Description : |
Lime sand deposits at Wardang Island. From 1910 to 1968 Broken Hill Associated Smelters quarried lime sand from Wardang Island to use in its smelting process at Port Pirie. From 1918, this was a mechanised process, with a purpose built railway transporting the sand from the north of the Island down to the jetty, where trucks such as this carted it to waiting barges. |
