Jesse Young's drawing shows Ernest Giles's expedition of 1875 which covered the area from Fowler Bay in South Australia to Perth in Western Australia. The image shows Giles and his party battling their way through dense scrub. It was on this expedition that Boundary Dam and Queen Victoria Springs were found. Giles was well supplied with camels from Sir Thomas Elder's Beltana camel stud. With the long dry stretches that the expedition endured, it would have not been possible without the camels. Young was a member of the expedition. In 1866 Sir Thomas Elder imported a large number of camels into South Australia, to establish a breeding stud at Beltana. The camels were from Pakistan and included riding camels and heavier breeds for carrying loads. Together with the camels he brought men to handle them. Although usually referred to as 'Afghans' they were actually from Rajasthan and Baluchistan (now West Pakistan). Ernest Giles used both camels and horses on his third expedition. The horses died from lack of water but the camels survived. This convinced Giles of their worth and after this he relied solely on camels. |
