Description :

The Port Victoria flour mill when it was burnt, on the 30th April 1928.

The Port Victoria flour mill came into service in March 1883. Built by Henry Hincks it was equipped with the latest machinery and produced flour of the finest quality from the locally grown wheat. The original stone rollers were changed to steel rollers in January 1888 and a gas plant installed. The mill complex covered five town blocks and included a large wheat store with a capacity of 20,000 bags. In 1920 the mill was bought by SW Powell of New Zealand.

The mill was burnt 30 April 1928: there was insufficient water to fight the blaze so it burned unabated. By morning only the shell of the building remained and the town lost an important industry and source of employment.
