Innes National Park was declared in 1970 in part to save the habitat of the rare Great Western whipbird. The park comprises over 9,000 hectares of coastal vegetation including heath, swamp and mallee lands much of which is representative of the vegetation of Yorke Peninsula prior to clearance for agricultural purposes. Steep cliffs with wide vistas and sandy beaches with good fishing and surfing make Innes a popular and accessible park. There are a variety of walking trails of varying length and difficulty.

Within the park are the remains of the village of Inneston which was for many years the centre of the Peninsula's gypsum mining industry. The wreck of the Ethel is one of the more accessible shipwrecks along the rugged coastline.

Innes National Park has been chosen as the site for a radio-monitored release of the officially extinct mainland Tammar wallaby. These wallabies have been sourced from New Zealand where they were taken in the 1860s by Governor George Grey as part of a private menagerie.
