Description :

Portrait of Margaret McArthur, Nutritionist with the 1948 American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land.

The Institute of Anatomy, Canberra, attached a nutritional unit to the expedition to study Aboriginal health and nutrition. Margaret McArthur, M.Sc. the only female scientist on the expedition, was part of this Unit as Nutritionist. The AASEAL Expedition was McArthur's first major Australian field work.
McArthur would often work remotely and alone, gathering information about the little-know dietary requirements and food gathering practices of the Aboriginal people visited during the Expedition. Her work involved weighing and measuring people's food intake and also judging the state of their nutrition, using food gathered by the women, such as yams, seeds and fruits, and wallaby and fish brought to camp by the men. McArthur also used the opportunity to observe domestic life and recorded the way the children learned and imitated the techniques of their parents to locate and prepare the food.
