Barker Monument, (Capt. Collet Barker) Mt. Barker Mount Barker was named by Captain Charles Sturt. Sturt had mistaken the mountain for Mt Lofty as he sailed down the River Murray on his journey of discovery in 1830-31. Mt Barker had been seen by Barker in 1831, when he climbed Mt Lofty but was not named by him. On learning of Barker's tragic death at the mouth of the Murray, Sturt realised his error and named the mountain for his fellow army officer. |
