Description : |
Sheet 1 shows the front and rear elevations of the Austral Stores in Hindley Street, which were designed by Albert Conrad for his father, Leopold, who ran a successful butcher and smallgoods business. The building was designed as 12 shops with living accommodation on the second storey. The building is a good example of the ornate Edwardian style, with two three storey towers, and the roof has strong vertical elements, tiles and ridge work. The building is constructed of brick with stuccoed dressings. This image shows the front and rear elevations. The Advertiser of 11 April 1903 wrote â?¦The general character of the work is a conventional rendering of Byzantine architecture, with a scheme of decoration on characteristic Eastern forms, a pleasing combination of colour being afforded by the adoption of red tinted bricks, and stained cement dressings, with a roof covering in terra cotta tiling. In 1908, J Grant leased the building, from which he operated a "coffee palace", a popular alternative to hotels after the growth of the Temperance Movement (to learn more about this see Religion: Mission). John West took over the business in 1919, changing the name to West's Coffee Palace which it is still known as today despite the complex being used as administration offices, currently for ArtsSA. Designed in the ornate Edwardian Style of the time, the building is an important landmark in Hindley Street. |
