Description :

This architectural drawing of the Central Market shows the Grote Street facade. The Central Market has operated from this site since 1869. However in 1899 it was decided that the original wood and iron sheds appeared unsightly and that a two storey brick facade facing Grote Street would give recognition and importance to the permanence of the markets. The design was created by the Corporation of Adelaide by chief draughtsman, R Sloan under the direction of the City Engineer J Vicars.

It was hoped that an agreeable facade would enhance Grote Street: The building was described as "... red brick, with a terra-cotta facings, and will undoubtedly be seen to special advantage in Grote Street, the magnificent width of this thoroughfare giving excellent opportunities for viewing architectural beauties. As can be seen the building is to be two storeys in height, the lower of which is to be filled with shops, with handsome plate-glass fronts. The arches above the shop fronts are to be filled with stained glass, which will greatly add to the appearance."

Not long after the Grote Street additions were completed, a 121 foot verandah was added to the facade.

The Central Market was only officially known by that name from 16 August 1965. Before that time it was the City Market.
