Description :

"Birksgate" verandah made of cast iron and glassed in.

Birksgate was built for Sir Thomas Elder about 1860. Elder was a pastoralist, mining entrepreneur and philanthropist. Birksgate was noted for an number of features, not least its iron work.

Cast-iron was a popular decorative choice in the 19th and early 20th century. It was made by pouring molten metal into moulds as opposed to wrought iron which is worked by craftsmen into the desired shape.

During the boom times of the gold rush and South Australia's copper boom (the 1860s), the lace designs became more elaborate, and efficiencies in the industrial process made it more affordable. Locally produced designs incorporating Australia's native flora and fauna were now familiar.
