Description :

The Museum of Economic Botany at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens photographed in 1889.

Construction began on the Museum in 1879 and it was opened to the public in May 1881. The Museum of Economic Botany is considered to be the first purpose-built museum building in South Australia. The exterior and interior have changed very little since the museum was first built. It was closed for renovations and conservation from late March 2005, and re-opened in October 2006 as part of the Garden's 150th anniversary celebrations.

The Museum was designed by EJ Woods and is designed in the 'Greek style' and was constructed from random masonry and then rendered in thick cement to imitate ashlar. The front is enhanced with a portico and steps. Six windows eight feet high flank the entrance.

The wooden ceiling of the museum is considered outstanding and is stencilled and painted in a Greek design by WJ Williams.

The cost of the building, fixtures, glazing and decorative painting was 2,900 pounds.

The Museum is listed in the Register of the National Estate and the South Australian Heritage Register.
