Description : |
The hospital for the insane at Hackney photographed about 1875. Set in six acres of land on the corner of Hackney and Botanic Roads the asylum was built in 1851 to an English Tudor revival style attributed to colonial architect William Bennet Hayes. Most of the buildings of the asylum complex were demolished in 1938, however some of the construction survives within the Adelaide Botanic Gardens including Yarrabee House, some of the walling and a small building once used as a morgue, now utilised by the gardens as a tool shed. |
