Description :
In the 1890s Hergott Springs was the northernmost head of the South Australian railway network. Beyond this point the only form of transport was the Afghan-run 'camel trains'. The settlement at Hergott Springs therefore became the largest of the 'Ghan towns' and was referred to as 'Little Afghanistan'. The Afghans came from a number of countries including modern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran. An iron mosque was built at Hergott Springs for the Afghan Muslims as early as the 1880s, and was Australia's first mosque.
