Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, like his forebears, was a member of the Reformed Church while the majority of his subjects belonged to the Lutheran Church. Seeking to avoid internal divisions and to unite against the strength of the Pope, he decided to unite the Reformed and the Lutheran churches. While the western provinces agreed to the Union, in the eastern provinces - particularly in Silesia and Posen - there was strong opposition. This increased from 1830 when use of the Kaiser's new form of liturgy was made compulsory. Opposing pastors were imprisoned, the belongings of those who would not worship in the new way were seized and hefty fines were charged for refusal to attend the Union churches. Ultimately, five million of these protesting Altelutherische ('Old Lutherans') sought religious freedom overseas. Some thousands made South Australia their new home. This small volume records contemporary reports of some of the specific incidents. |
