Description : |
The South Australian general election of 1896 saw two Australian firsts - the first time women were able to vote in a parliamentary election and the first Australian referendum. Premier Charles Kingston put to the general public the long debated subject of government funding for church schools, and the vexed question of whether daily Bible reading in state schools was appropriate. The issue of teachers reading from the Bible in government schools was an emotive topic throughout the 19th century, hotly debated in the press, parliament, pulpits and around dinner tables. The outcome of the 1896 referendum was a resounding 'no'. However the subject continued to re-surface in later years through the lobbying by people such as the Anglican Bishop Harmer, as suggested by this cartoon. |
