Description :
The Scottish professor, author and evangelist, Henry Drummond, visited Australia in 1890, specifically at the invitation of Christian student groups. His visit to Adelaide apparently resulted in the formation by ten male students of the Adelaide University Christian Union in March 1890. The aims of the group were to encourage unity among Christian university students of all church backgrounds and to provide a Christian influence to all students in the university. By 1893 'lady students' were also joining the group. Later one of these was Helen Mayo, in 1902 the University's second female medical graduate, who was inspired to work for a time in Delhi, India, and in Adelaide worked all her life to provide medical support structures to women and children. In 1896 a convention for Christian students was held at the University of Melbourne and a national alliance of groups was formed as the Australasian Student Christian Union. This was later affiliated with the World's Student Christian Federation. A strong missionary focus saw many students working overseas for mission organisations on completion of their university qualifications. Today the Evangelical Union is a descendant of the original group, and still arranges annual camps and conferences.
