Celestial chart of of the southern sky drawn by Babbage on his expedition to Lake Torrens in 1858.

Benjamin Herschel Babbage arrived in South Australia in 1851 and undertook engineering and geological survey work. In 1858 he was the leader of a government expedition instructed to explore and survey the country north from Port Augusta.
