Ernest Giles reconnoitered ahead of his main party with Alfred Gibson. Sand-hills and undulating gravelly plains stretched ahead of them, with no evidence of water anywhere. The way ahead was no better than it had been further to the south. They were forced to turn back. One of their two horses died of thirst, and reluctantly Giles decided to send Gibson back alone, to ride in their outgoing tracks, back to a cache of water and then to the depot where the main party waited. He was then to return with help for Giles who would attempt to walk back on foot.

Two days prior to this, Giles had decided to reduce their small party by releasing the two pack horses to find their own way back, and after watering the two riding horses, cached the remaining ten gallons of water in two casks in a tree. This would be there for the return to the main depot. He then continued on with Gibson, hoping that the country would change for the better.
