In June 1857 Stephen Hack explored the region around the Gawler Ranges and west of Lake Gairdner. He found good pasture land and apparently permanent water at Yardea, Pondanna, Kodondo and Cockatoo Springs, taking care wherever possible to use the Aboriginal names for these places. He had been directed by the South Australian government to search for a route to the north of the colony, and to locate good pasture and permanent water, and a viable passage for stock from Port Augusta to the interior. Only the depletion of his food supply and the condition of his horses, particularly their horseshoes compelled his return. Hack relied on information he was given by the local Aboriginal tribes for water supplies. He also deviated slightly from his instructions and went somewhat to the east of the line suggested to him by the government, and by doing so found good country. Hack also utilised high points in the country to examine the country ahead and determine his best course. In rounding the southern end of Lake Gairdner he was guided further south by his Aboriginal guides and discovered permanent waters, which would enable utilising the lands for pastoralism. |
