Hutchinson and Strangways and their party were now delayed by bad weather. On 8 December they were compelled to turn back as the boat had been overloaded with people, and provisions had run low. Initially they rowed towards Point McLeay. At first the water was shallow, about six feet, then deepened to 15 feet, before shoaling again. The men filled the water kegs here, and the water was sweet with no taint of the sea. They reached Currency Creek about 6pm and found three kangaroos left for them by the party of men who had remained a while at the base they had established there. As they had by now run out of food entirely this was an agreeable sight. Next day the party was joined by Captain Blenkinsop from the Encounter Bay whaling station. He was accompanied by Sir John Jeffcott, and the Governor's son. Captain Blenkinsop, manager of the whaling station and Sir John Jeffcott, judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia, then left to take the whaleboat out through the Murray Mouth. Before this however Blenkinsop located a large quantity of valuable whalebone on the shore of Hindmarsh Island and loaded it into the boat. They then proceeded to the mouth of the river. |
