Description :

Portrait of John Ridley, inventor of the'Ridley Reaper' harvesting machine.

John Ridley was born in Durham, England and immigrated with his wife and young children to South Australia in 1839. He established a flour mill on land at Hindmarsh near Adelaide. As there was a labour shortage in South Australia in the 1840s, Ridley experimented with designs for a machine to reap wheat. His machine was to revolutionise the harvesting of wheat.
Ridley returned in England in 1853 and died there in 1887.
