Winnecke directs the members of the expedition along Gill's Range to Bagot's Creek, where they are to examine fossil deposits and make other natural history collections. On 9 June he records that they captured numerous birds including six young emus. Charles Winnecke brought his own work up to date, and blazed a nearby tree with the expedition's mark H.E.E. above C.W. and 29 the number of the camp. Even in June, in central Australia the temperature was 97 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade. He details a small side party which will depart the next day to explore another area. William Austin Horn a wealthy pastoralist and miner sponsored the expedition for the scientific examination of the MacDonnell Ranges in 1894. Charles Winnecke was the leader and the party included Professor Baldwin Spencer, Professor Ralph Tate, and GA Keartland among others. An extensive collection of natural history specimens was made with the assistance of the local Aboriginal people and some 27,000 square miles was mapped. A four volume study of the results of the expedition was published in 1896 covering zoology, botany, geology and anthropology. |
