The Horn expedition travelled west along Gill's Range and reached Reedy Creek with its 50 foot waterfall. Another creek is nearby. With plenty of water at hand Charles Winnecke planned to stay two days. While the scientific staff make valuable additions to their collections Winnecke travelled on with Cowle and two Aboriginal men to connect up with William Gosse's route of 1873. He found Gosse's marked tree with its roots fully exposed and they erected a cairn as a more permanent marker of the earlier expedition. This area of central Australia had been visited by a number of earlier explorers, including Ernest Giles and Charles Chewings. Winnecke also noted that the plant Gastralobium grandiflorum, poisonous for camels was in the area. The men would need to be vigilant. The Horn Scientific Exploring Expedition, financed by William Austin Horn, was conducting a scientific examination of the MacDonnell Ranges in central Australia. The results in zoology, botany, geology and anthropology would fill four volumes and were published 1896. |
