Between 1885 and 1886 David Lindsay led a private expedition from Adelaide to Darwin. During the course of this he undertook a number of surveys of pastoral runs. In this extract he was travelling in central Australia north of the Simpson Desert among the ephemeral rivers of the region. He considered that he was on the Hale River, discovered by Charles Winnecke with some good pastoral land adjoining. Lindsay discovered a larger stream which he named Elder Creek, after Sir Thomas Elder. He discovered a small tin deposit and then a bar of granite studded with garnets, which crossed the creek. Lindsay considered they might even be rubies. He determined that the Elder Creek joined up with the Todd River. From this point the country began to deteriorate. The rubies were indeed garnets. David Lindsay would continue his explorations in central Australia, and in 1888 find a payable deposit of mica in the MacDonnell Ranges. In 1891 he was appointed leader of the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, which was financed by Sir Thomas Elder. This expedition was to explore western South Australia and across into Western Australia, examining the last blanks on the Australian map. |
