Description :

Advertisement for the screening of The jazz singer staring Al Jolson, and other 'Cinesound presentations' at the Wondergraph, 'Adelaide's leading talkie theatre', from 2 March 1929.

In March 1929 talking pictures or 'talkies' came to Adelaide. On 2 March 1929 the Wondergraph Theatre in Hindley Street screened The jazz singer, starring Al Jolson singing a selection of his well-known songs and talking to an appreciative audience.

In competition, the Regent Theatre screened newsreels and featured The red dance, a film about the Russian revolution, accompanied by a musical soundtrack - not an actual 'talkie', which Wondergraph advertising was quick to point out: 'Be not misled'.

By early 1930, silent movies were outmoded, as most theatres in Adelaide and some in the suburbs were equipped to show 'talkies' using either Vitaphone or Movietone sound production systems.
