Description :

Portrait of H.H. Birt from Stuart's Creek from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/3).

Stuart Creek was discovered by the explorer John McDouall Stuart in 1858: he was subsequently awarded a claim along the creek (which he had named Chambers Creek) as a reward for his efforts in opening up the northern parts of the colony of South Australia. By the end of his sixth expedition in 1862 Stuart was suffering ill health and transferred his claim to Alfred Barker and John Chambers.

Barker stocked the Stuart Creek run (SW of Lake Eyre South) in the Winter/Spring 1859, but heavy stock losses were sustained during the drought of the late 1860s. In 1870 Stuart Creek Station was in the hands of John Howard Angas and in 1918 was sold to the Kidman family which held it for the next 80 years. It became attached to the Anna Creek Station as an out station, until being partitioned in 1998 with the larger portion being sold to WMC Resources ltd, and the smaller 1000 square kilometre northern portion becoming part of the Anna Creek lease.

Anna Creek Station is the largest working cattle station in the world.

It is not known in what capacity H H Birt was associated with Stuart's Creek station.
