Description :

In November 1907 Henry Dutton and Murray Aunger decided to take a car across the continent from south to north, Adelaide to Darwin. The car was a 20 horsepower Talbot, with a four speed gearbox. Aunger was a talented mechanic and a skilful driver, all of which would be needed for the journey to Darwin. There were no made roads through central Australia at this time: theirs would be the first such journey by car. They only reached Tennant Creek before the car became hopelessly bogged in deep mud. Here they were forced to abandon the car. They are seen here just prior to their departure from Alice Springs.

The following year Dutton and Aunger set out again, in a more powerful car. They found the first car just as they had left it the previous year. It was repaired, and they continued the journey with the two cars, arriving in Darwin 51 days after their departure from Adelaide. 42 days were spent in actual driving. The cars had successfully negotiated sand dunes, gibber plains, rocky gorges and flooded creeks. The men had demonstrated the capability of the automobile in the rugged terrain of the Outback.
