William Tietkens prepared three pack horses and riding horses for himself and Ernest Giles, while Giles recuperated from his struggle in the desert. He suffered severe cramps after his long privations, and only the necessity of a search for the missing Gibson compelled him to leave the camp so soon. They set out on 2 May, the day after Giles' return to search for Alfred Gibson. Some rain had fallen, not enough to leave water on the ground or rocks, or fortunately to obliterate the tracks, but it cooled the air to a comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

In fact Giles held little hope of Alfred Gibson being still alive. With a horse he should easily have reached the depot ahead of Giles. The horse had been Giles' own and was a good one. When they left the depot, one man, Jimmy Andrews, would be left by himself, but there was no choice in the matter. Giles could only trust he would be safe.
