Description : |
Larry Wells completes his report of his side trip on the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition. He believed that the number of Aboriginal tracks he had seen indicated that there were plenty of water holes in the area. On the night of 18 July he had watered the camels from the water kegs they had carried, the first time he recorded doing so. While some feed had been found for them, Wells did not consider the country well suited for the camels. He had also observed that the flat country he had passed across had been burnt the previous summer to encourage the growth of new grass in the event of rain. Wells had explored an additional 240 miles of country in his side trip. David Lindsay had told Larry Wells that he would make smoke signals to indicate the location of the main party. Wells had looked for this on 19 July but had not seen it. However he expected to intercept the track of the main party the next day and did so. It was easy to distinguish the track of so many camels and men from that of the Aboriginal people. As an experienced bushman Wells was not unduly concerned about the missing smoke signal, although Lindsay recorded burning the spinifex on 20 July, and again on 21 July of sending up smoke signals to direct the small side party to the location of the main group. In the event Wells had rejoined the main party on the evening of 22 July 1891. |
