Description :

A small boy with a toy horse and whip. This is a posed studio photograph and the child is unlikely to be the owner of the toy horse he stands beside. However the horse does shows signs of usage, perhaps by the photographer's children.

Small horses on a plank and wheels such as this could be used by a toddler to help him walk, much as modern 'walkers' are. Supplying the child with a miniature whip would enable him to imitate his elders in managing the horse. The horse could also be used as a pull along toy by using the reins, and it is possible that there may have been a handle that could be inserted into the platform to make this easier.
