Description :

Letters to the editor showing that the South Australian public was divided on the issue of the Gulf War.

Some letters express the feeling that all other avenues had been exhausted and that action against Saddam Hussein had to be taken, others that war had been committed to too hastily. Several letters express disapproval of peace protestors, believing that the peace rallies undermined the efforts of those serving in the armed forces.

The cartoon by Michael Atchison shows Saddam Hussein tearing up the Geneva Convention by his actions in Kuwait. It also depicts Mikhail Gorbachev ripping his Nobel Peace Prize, as Soviet troops had recently fired on citizens in Vilnius, Lithuania and stormed public buildings in Riga, Latvia, in an attempt to discourage the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) from seeking independence from the Soviet Union.
