Description :

Post Office building, Railway Terrace North, Marree. A horse and cart is parked in front of the Post Office.

Charles Mountford recorded many outback scenes in South Australia and the Northern Territory during the 1930s to the 1960s. These images serve as a valuable record of the development and infrastructure of outback Australia during that time. Mountford photographed historic buildings such as railway stations and sidings, huts, cattle stations, homesteads, shops and outback towns. This photograph of the Post Office building, Railway Terrace North, Marree, was taken by Mountford in 1935, possibly when he was traveling to Hermannsburg Mission Station with the Commonwealth Board of Enquiry [into the ill-treatment of Aborignal people at Uluru]. At that time Marree was a major railhead for cattle driven from the Birdsville track stock route and was the narrow gauge railway transfer for rail transport to Alice Springs, most notably the Ghan. Today, the descendents of Afghan cameleers, Aboriginal residents and European people make up the approximately 150 people living in the outback township, visited by tourists and the owners of outlying cattle stations, and their families.
