Description :

Members of the 1954 National Geographic expedition to Melville Island, pictured in front of the National Geographic Society flag. From left, back row: Mr George Joy (cook), Eric Jolliffe (artist), Brian Daly (geologist), William E Harney (guide) Front row: Jane Goodale (ethnologist), Charles Mountford (expedition leader), Justice William E O'Douglas

A variety of people with many different skills made up a safe and successful scientific expedition. Pictured here are people with a diversity of skills including scientists, artists, and the all-important expedition cook and handyman, George Joy. Mountford commented "What a dream of a cook he turned out to be!" (see page 155 of Monty), as the expedition ate better than on any journey Mountford could recall. The cook had access to fresh fish, game and turtle eggs, which differed vastly from the tough damper and bully beef Mountford had eaten on expeditions to Central Australia. Considering the transport troubles, driving rain and extreme heat the group experienced in the Top End, a palatable meal must have been a welcome relief at the end of a working day.
