Description :

360 degree panorama of Adelaide taken by Townsend Duryea from the Adelaide Town Hall tower. The panorama consists of 14 photographic prints pasted in sequence onto calico. He began in the morning, facing north, and went anticlockwise to avoid the sun on the lens.

When viewed together the fourteen images of the panorama give a bird's eye view of colonial Adelaide and the building activity of the time. The vista extends as far as the parklands. An interesting feature is the lack of trees at this time, a very different aspect from today.

The method of photography employed by Duryea in 1853 was the wet plate process, which had by that time superseded the daguerrotype.
