The lessons contained in this book are designed to progress the learner-reader from words of three letters to words of six letters; the author has 'also endeavoured to render the language like that of childhood' (from Preface p. iv). Most lessons include an attractive illustration to intrigue the young reader. In Lesson V (5) 'The Toy Gun' the text reads: This copy lacks the title page and some preliminary text; the volume had been given a wraparound cover to protect it and many of the pages are soiled from heavy use. The book is inscribed: 'This belongs to Alfred Muller Simpson by his mother 1847'. Alfred was born in 1843 and his family emigrated to South Australia in 1849. |
