John Weatherstone (or Watherstone, or Watherston) arrived in South Australia from London with his brother, James and his father Sandy on June 19 1839 on the Hoogley (Ship). Little more is known about this pioneer. Cockburn recorded that in Leigh's Creek and Finniss Springs Weatherstone lost everything during the drought of the 1860s.

Finniss Springs was over 446 square miles in extent. It was west of Marree and extended north to the shore of Lake Eyre South. The lease of this run was originally taken up by a Mr Curnow, and was later held by Samuel Davenport and David Power. It was managed for them by John Weatherstone, but by 1862 Davenport and Power had quit the run. Thomas Elder then held Finniss Springs, but it was abandoned in 1884. In the late 1890s Finniss Springs was acquired by the Willowie Pastoral Company and was used largely as an outstation for Stuart Creek station.

Weatherstone also held the Leigh's Creek run in partnership with George Bunn from 1857 but sold it two years later to G H Davenport and William Fowler.

John Weatherstone and George Bunn discovered Lake Weatherstone, 35 miles north west of Beltana.

Weatherstone died in August 1896.
