Portrait of J. Campbell from Glenorchy from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/3). John Campbell was one of four brothers who settled in the Mount Remarkable district in 1845: his brothers were Alexander, Murdock and Donald. The lease of the property was recorded in their father's name Colin. A house was built for Colin and his wife Jane by the brothers and named Glenorchy after one of the Duke of Argyll's properties in Scotland, from where the Campbell family had emigrated. John was at one time the district auctioneer and pound keeper. The area was originally called Bangor. Alexander owned the Willowie run which was subsequently taken up by John Howard Angas. Both Murdock and John were members of the small exploration party led by Charles Swinden to the west of Lake Torrens in 1857. John Campbell died in Kent Town in 1908. |
