The first pole of the southern section for the Overland Telegraph Line to Darwin was planted in Port Augusta 1 October 1870. This telegraph line which was completed in 1871 together with the submarine cable from Asia opened up direct telegraphic communication with Europe.
Port Augusta was also the main supply point for both the southern and central sections of the OTL, with men and supplies passing through the town.
