Description : |
Premises of the Lion Arts Centre, formerly Fowler's 'Lion' factory. David and James Fowler established a retail business, D and J Fowler (Australia) Ltd., in 1854. Their original premises were in King William Street, but as the business expanded into wholesale a new factory was required. Designed by architect Frank Counsell, the building was occupied by Fowlers from 1906 until the early 1980s.The building's facade was originally symmetrical but due to road widening in 1966 the eastern wing was demolished. It was known as the 'Lion' factory as Fowlers' range of Lion products were among their most popular merchandise. D and J Fowler registered the Lion brand name as a trade mark in 1886. In 1992 the factory and surrounds were converted into an arts precinct, known as the Lion Arts Centre. The Centre is home to a variety of arts organisations, including the Media Resource Centre,Leigh Warren & Dancers and Craftsouth. |
